Change of Major and Declaration of Minor

The Change of Major process pertains to current Northeastern University undergraduate day school students. Students currently enrolled in N.U.in and Global Scholars should refer to the change of major process as outlined for their program.

Process

Step 1: Reflection.

What is your previous math and science experience? The engineering curriculum assumes that students have taken a year of pre-college coursework in physics, chemistry, and precalculus. Students are urged to reflect on their academic preparation and interest in applying math and science to solve real world problems.

Step 2: Schedule an appointment with one of the designated advisors listed below through the Navigate appointment calendar in the StudentHub

  • Bioengineering: Adriel Antoine or Taylor Chelo
  • Chemical Engineering: Megan Doe or Lauren McCallick Thomas
  • Civil/Environmental Engineering: Anna Daher or Laura Kenney
  • Electrical/Computer Engineering: Alexis Lavallee or Andrew Manchino
  • Mechanical/Industrial Engineering: Roy Dalsheim or Taylor Pons

Step 3: After meeting with an academic advisor, students must submit a Change of Major Request Form by no later than the last day to drop a class with a W grade for the term.

Admission and Entrance Criteria

Requests submitted for students currently enrolled in the College of Engineering will be reviewed on a rolling basis.

Requests for students currently enrolled outside the College of Engineering will be reviewed at the end of the term following the posting of final grades. A major change will be processed for students who meet admission criteria, to be effective in the following term. After admission into the College of Engineering, students may register for courses restricted to College of Engineering students.

Admissions criteria is as follows:

  • Must be in Good Academic Standing
  • Minimum cumulative Northeastern Grade Point Average (GPA) of 2.0
  • Minimum grade of C (or advanced standing credit) in one required math course and one required science course (chemistry or physics) as indicated in the engineering curriculum.
  • No more than two deficiencies (I, W, U) in any required coursework as indicated in the engineering curriculum.
  • If you are a COE student, please contact your assigned academic advisor to declare a COE Minor.
  • If you are a non-COE student, please submit the College of Engineering Declaration of Minor form.  An academic advisor will be in contact with you within 2 weeks of the form submission.
  • Students should declare a minor as early as possible and no later than the end of the junior year. Students must fulfill all requirements for the minor and major concurrently and may not extend their program of study to complete a minor. Completion of the requirements of a minor is noted on the transcript.
