Our innovative educational approach, transformative research capabilities, and world-renowned cooperative education program give students the multidisciplinary knowledge and experience to maximize their opportunity for career advancement and success in their chosen field.
Graduate students can participate in our No. 1 ranked signature cooperative education program, which combines rigorous academics with professional practice giving students up to 8 months of employment in their chosen field. Additionally, an Experiential PhD program provides PhD students opportunities such as internships, fellowships, practicums, LEADERs (combines research and professional skills in industry or public sector) and special initiative programs.
An R1 research university, Northeastern is in the top-tier for Research activity among U.S. colleges and universities, according to the Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education. Participate in groundbreaking convergent research with our esteemed Faculty in 20 multidisciplinary research centers and institutes funded with eight federal agencies to push the bounds of innovation to new heights.

Flexibility
Our master’s programs have electives and concentrations, as well as a thesis option, while some PhD programs have tracks. Students can choose research areas and experiential learning opportunities that align with their interests. An interdisciplinary PhD program is also available. Select programs are offered part-time, online or in hybrid formats.
Graduate Certificates
A Graduate Certificate is another way for students to personalize their path with a specialization in an area of their choice. Over 15 graduate certificates are available. Certificates can be taken in addition to or in combination with a master’s degree, or provide a pathway to a master’s degree in Northeastern’s College of Engineering. Certificates are also available for PhD students. Students should consult with their faculty advisor regarding these options.

Programs are offered in Boston, Massachusetts—known for high-tech, biotech, and academia—and some are also offered in innovation hubs across Northeastern’s global network in the U.S. and in Canada.

Robotics Student Helps Maritime Startup Map Unexplored Ocean Environments
Shalini Agrawal, MS, robotics, completed a co-op at maritime startup Orpheus Ocean, developing critical camera integration and navigation software to enable low-cost autonomous underwater vehicles to map unexplored deep-sea environments.
Translating Data Rigor into Business Relevance
Tianyu Yang, PhD, industrial engineering, used Northeastern’s LEADERs program and an industry fellowship at AmeriLife to connect his academic data research with real-world business challenges, focusing on how to translate complex analytics into clear, actionable advice for decision-makers.
MIE PhD Wins ASME SHTC HTD K-9 Best Presentation Award
Xuguang Zhang, MS’22, PhD, mechanical engineering, advised by MIE Associate Professor Yi Zheng, received the ASME SHTC HTD K-9 Best Presentation Award at the ASME 2026 Summer Heat Transfer Conference for his presentation, “Additively Manufactured Hybrid Cooling Designs for High Performance Li-Ion Pouch Cell Thermal Management,” which details battery safety research developed through an ongoing collaboration with the NASA Glenn Research Center.
