Revolutionizing Computing With Meta-ONNs
MIE/ECE Professor Yongmin Liu was awarded a $467,930 NSF grant for “Design and Realization of Multiplexed Meta-Optical Neural Networks.” He will design and implement a novel class of metasurface-based ONNs, which can operate at optical frequencies and realize diverse functions.

Predicting Rainfall With Artificial Intelligence
A research model that uses AI to quickly and accurately predict weather forecasts will be tested by the Tennessee Valley Authority. The model was created by Puja Das, PhD’27, interdisciplinary engineering, who is supervised by CEE Distinguished Professor Auroop Ganguly.

$1.5M NSF Grant To Develop New Photonic Materials
MIE/ECE Associate Professor Yongmin Liu and ECE Assistant Professor Sunil Mittal, in collaboration with the Georgia Institute of Technology and Purdue University, are leading a $1.5 million NSF DMREF grant for “Accelerating the Design and Development of Engineered Photonic Materials Based on a Data-Driven Deep Learning Approach.”

Burcu Ozek, PhD’24, industrial engineering, focused research on developing objective pain assessment methods through machine learning, aiming to accurately quantify uncertainty and preexisting pain conditions. She co-authored six peer-reviewed journal articles, with four as lead author.

Innovating Through Artificial Intelligence
Massachusetts Gov. Maura Healey, Boston Mayor Michelle Wu, state economic development and technology leaders, and other officials visited Northeastern to learn from faculty how AI can solve some of the most pressing issues in the state and the world. New AI Architecture Can Detect Breast Cancer With a Near-Perfect Accuracy Rate
BioE Assistant Research Professor Saeed Amal and his research team have developed a new AI architecture that has detected breast cancer with a 99.7% accuracy rate. His research was published in the journal Cancers. He has submitted an invention disclosure with the Center for Research Innovation on the idea.
