COE Donates $10,000 to BPS Science Fair in Honor of National Engineers Week
Earlier this month, the College of Engineering welcomed high schoolers from Boston Latin and O’Bryant School of Math and Science for a STEM field trip, and presented the Boston Public Schools Science Fair with a $10,000 gift — a contribution the college is spotlighting as we honor National Engineers Week.

Minkara Wins 2026 Sloan Fellowship for Pulmonary Protein Research
Assistant Professor Mona Minkara, bioengineering, was given the 2026 Alfred P. Sloan Fellowship for her research at Northeastern. She is studying a protein called collectins within the pulmonary surfactant, hoping to model its functions to enhance innate immunity from the lungs.

Cutting Costs for Biofuel by Combining Opposing Microbes to Optimize Manufacturing
New research from the Woolston Lab at Northeastern, led by Chemical Engineering Assistant Professor Ben Woolston, is optimizing the biofuel manufacturing process by combining different types of microbes. To do this, they are putting them in the same bioreactor with little oxygen, hoping to reduce cost and resource use in the biofuel industry.

Zhu Joins Editorial Boards of the Journal of Solid State Electrochemistry and Extreme Mechanics Letters
Juner Zhu, an associate professor of mechanical and industrial engineering, has joined the editorial boards of the Journal of Solid State Electrochemistry and Extreme Mechanics Letters. Zhu also recently joined the Advisory Board of Cell Reports Physical Science.

Megan Farrington, E’27, electrical engineering and physics, and Maren Ritterbuck, E’27, bioengineering and biochemistry were nominated for the 2026 Barry Goldwater Scholarship—a highly competitive, merit-based award for outstanding students in mathematics, the natural sciences, and engineering who are interested in pursuing careers in research.
